The different materials you can find are as follows: Felt – Felt is the most common material to buy a glide in, mainly because it is the softest. Felt stands the smallest chance at scratching the surface of your floors, and allows your chairs and furniture to “glide” over the floor without damaging or scuffing anything. These are typically the “go-to” kind of furniture glide for the average household, mainly because they are extremely easy to come by, won’t hurt anything, and are really cheap. You can buy felt chair glides at any local home improvement store, and can get them separately, or in bulk, if you so prefer. Rubber – Rubber is a more durable material, so it’s not necessarily the best choice for indoor use. That being said, rubber is also not the best choice for outdoor use, so why is it available? Rubber glides work well in places like schools and gymnasiums, where the floor is much more durable, and the chairs get moved around all the time. The goal was to use them in a more public environment, to protect both the furniture and the floors, and just try to make things last a little longer. As many of the rubber chair glides are not vulcanized, it is recommended not use them for outdoor use. Nylon – This is a great material and the best for outdoor use. Nylon is soft and smooth, yet extremely durable and can handle just about anything you throw at it. Since nylon is a bit on the harder side, you may not want to use these glides indoor, as they have a tendency to scratch hardwood floors, unless you have carpet. The nylon surface actually allows your chairs to “glide” along the deck or the hard patio surface outside, which leads to a much more appealing seating situation, and keeps things from getting damaged (as quickly) over time. It is strongly recommended to use nylon chair glides for outdoor use only, indoor usage could severely damage your floors. Combo Glides – These are a bit different from what was mentioned above. Combo glides actually combine two materials to make a glide which is both durable, yet “caring” to the surface it sits on. Usually, those two materials are nylon and felt. A combo glide consists of a nylon body, for excellent durability, and a felt base to make it soft to the touch, and prevent from damaging your floors. These are a great choice for both indoor and outdoor use, but be aware that the felt can wear out, and the nylon will be exposed, possibly damaging your floors. As you can see, chair glides and furniture glides are extremely important for both indoor and outdoor use. They help to protect your patio, deck, hardwood floors, and the furniture from damage. Since things can so easily wear out, it is important to protect them and prevent premature wear and tear as much as possible. The best way to do that with your furniture is with chair glides. |
